Workshop 1: The Reggio Emilia Approach
The schools of Reggio Emilia, a town in Northern Italy, were first developed after World War II. Instrumental in developing these schools was Loris Malaguzzi who is known as the father of the Reggio Emilia approach. These schools reflect his view that the child is competent and capable, that the teacher is an active participant in the learning process rather than a direct provider of information. This workshop will explore the Reggio Emilia philosophies, and examine how young children can be engaged in research and thinking.  Over the last three years the teachers in the Early Learning Center at St. Thomas School have been exploring  this philosophy and working to create a constructivist, rigorous early childhood curriculum.  We will share our documentation panels, our on-going questions and our reflections.

Workshop 2: Exploring the Magic of Blocks
Explore how block building can foster the ability to plan, represent your knowledge, promote symbolic thinking and problem solving. Join your peers in an exciting day of exploration of a variety of blocks, ramps, and tunnels.

Experience firsthand how building with others promotes self-confidence, internal self-control, and risk taking. Take the opportunity to explore different types and sizes of blocks. Explore classroom environments that enhance block play and provide links to art, writing, map/diagram reading and much more.

Existing law, the Leroy Greene California Assessment of Academic Achievement Act, requires each school district, charter school, and county office of education to administer to each of its pupils in grades 2 to 11, inclusive, certain achievement tests.

This bill, commencing July 1, 2012, would exclude pupils in grade 2 from the standards-based achievement test requirement and make conforming changes.

The bill would require the State Department of Education by July 1, 2014, to identify and make available to school districts information regarding existing assessments in language arts and mathematics for pupils in grade 2 for diagnostic use by classroom teachers. The bill would require these provisions to be implemented from the savings realized from the elimination of the grade 2 standards-based achievement testing.

Description:

Designs, develops, and delivers educational programs. May work on an on-call, short-duration basis within defined subject matter areas and program objectives.

Standard Duties:

Develops lesson plans and implements curriculum for targeted student audiences. May teach students in a classroom setting; assists with presenting and reinforcing learning concepts within a specified subject or subject area. Advises and supports student academic success in subject area; provides an environment for academic growth and personal development for students. Oversees classroom management on a daily basis. Maintains student academic records and record-keeping ledgers for students participating in the program. Distributes supplemental assignments to students when needed and as appropriate to the target student population. Performs evaluations of classes taught for inclusion in academic progress reviews. Build partnerships with families.  Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge and understanding of learning concepts relevant to early childhood, elementary and/or secondary level students. Working knowledge and understanding of pre-college educational programs. Knowledge of the rules, regulations, and laws regarding student academic records. Early Childhood Education and developmentally appropriate practice for preschool children; Reggio Emilia Approach to education; Focused Portfolio Assessment system

Curriculum development skills. Records maintenance skills. Analytical, evaluative, and critical thinking skills. Strong interpersonal, collaboration and communication skills.

Education- Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

Experience in NAEYC accreditation process and with play-based approaches preferred.
